Visualize Your Goal and Push Through The Pain

A different approach to leg training

Before we decide to train specifically to be the optimal hunter, we need to look at our overall training approach, outline objectives and determine what is the optimal course of action to take to achieve our goals. Right now we’re training very differently than what our bodies are used to. We’re focused on ramping up our conditioning, our endurance and being comfortable with being uncomfortable. In 3 months we’ll be training differently — ramping up our cardio throughout the workout as we incorporate more full-body movement exercises. For this workout, I took little to no breaks, kept my heart rate up and focused my intensity more on pushing through the pain while trying to maintain composure, rather then focus on how much weight I was pushing.

“We’re focused on ramping up our conditioning, our endurance and being comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

Hamstring/quad split leg training is focused on endurance and conditioning of the slow-twitch muscle fibers

We currently are working out legs twice a week. Our experience of training this way over the past few months has shown us that we’re able to work out the muscle tissue deeper, keep our metabolic rate up higher and our legs are actually healing faster, and  that, over any other body part, is evidence that our legs require more frequent stimulus to remain fit and healthy.

Today’s workout was a quad focus workout. Next workout, in 3 days time, will be a hamstring focus.

Quad Focused Leg Workout

  • Warm up with leg extensions 3 plates, 3 sets of 15-10
  • 4 working sets of smith squats, full range as deep as I could go, 15-20 reps each set
  • 3 sets of leg press, pyramiding up to 810 lbs
  • Super-set with walking lunges and hamstring curl in-between leg press sets
  • Leg Press strip-set, 6 sets total starting with 9 plates each side and ending with 5
  • Abductor 3 sets x 30 reps
  • Stretch, roll and invert

Primal Training — there’s no one perfect formula

Everyone is different and every body requires different stimulus to achieve optimal results. For 20 years I trained a very specific way. I followed the magazines. I read the books. I followed the typical bodybuilder split, worked out 5 days a week for 2 hours each day. I trained typically in the 6-10 rep range like we were told to do. I trained for muscle size and strength — at all costs. I gained a bit of size and although I was never the strongest guy in the gym, I was a bit stronger because of my efforts. But I never achieved the output that I expected for the input that I gave. Ironically, I have never seen as many positive results in terms of physical and aesthetic changes since I started primal training, rather then for aesthetics.

Visualize what success looks like and following your instincts

Your mind is amazing. Without going into too much scientific detail, your mind has the ability to command your body to do amazing things. I like to Set a tangible and attainable goal while I work out. It is part of the visualization process in helping me transport my mind out of the gym and into context of the hunt. Stalking a herd of Elk at 10,000 feet elevation. Getting up over the next ridge. Feeling the burn and anguish of the push. Remaining stealthy as every muscle fiber screams for rest. Being prepared and able to take the perfect shot when the time comes. So rather than moving the weight, I’m now earning every step I inch closer to my goal.

“It is part of the visualization process in helping me transport my mind out of the gym and into context of the hunt.”

Eat. Breathe. Train. Sleep. Plan. Visualize. It’s a 365 mentality.

I am obsessed. There’s so much to learn, and I want to absorb it all. This journey permeates my soul, so every rep in the gym, every meal I eat, every mountain I climb — I am thinking about the hunt, and I am excited to share as much about the journey as I can through these updates and vlog posts.

Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.

My training will change. My body will change. My mind will change. Throughout this journey, I will be capturing it all and sharing it with you. I’d love to take you along for the ride. So, what do you say, are you in?
