The First Hunt

I am human. I am hunter.

I have found a new home. A place where I belong. A place that I long for. A new sanctuary where I am able to leave behind the meaningless clutter and get reacquainted with my spirit. To commune with nature, and just be…human.

This video recounts the journey to my first hunt ever, bow hunting for Colorado Merriam spring turkey. This was my first time hunting for anything, ever. There was no guide to guide me, no blind to hid behind and no experience to rely on.

I did not enjoy taking a life. But there’s joy in knowing that this life will live on through me. This turkey may have lived and died in the wild, and transferred his life and sprit back to the earth in one form or another, to predators or to old age, without any human interaction. Instead, I had an encounter with this magnificent creature, and his spirit will live on within us, and the story that I share of him will continue to breathe life through me.

In sharing this I hope to offer a different point of view coming from someone who once had a very negative pre-conceived notion of hunting; vulgar, barbaric and unnecessary. I refuse to continue to live in ignorance about where my nourishment comes from.

I also hope that by sharing the experience of becoming a hunter I may inspire those to pursue their own passions, no matter how inconceivable they may seem at the present time. In less than a year, I have been able to do what once seemed impossible through the advice and encouragement from friends and through believing that fear and lack of knowledge were the only things standing in the way. It goes to show that if you take the time to deconstruct and demystify a discipline, set realistic goals, and get the right advice and encouragement from others, you can carve out a feasible pathway to achieve your vision.

“I did not enjoy taking a life. But there’s joy in knowing that this life will live on through me.”
